Casting

Casting

There are many ways to make molds and cast objects.  This project explores how to create a mold from an image.  Any image desired can be used but black and white images work best. The process uses Rhino to create a solid surface from the image.  This solid surface can then be CNC routed to create a positive cast.  In order to create a negative, which is what you need to pour a mold into, the positive mold was vacuumed formed with plastic.  The form was drilled through to created multiple holes so plastic could be laid on top of it and vacuumed formed.  This vacuumed formed piece of plastic creates a perfect mold to pure anything into.  For this experiment and for cost effectiveness, plaster was used.  This method of fabrication can be used at various scales and can even allow one to create 3 dimensional imagery in stone work on facades of buildings.  The method is very useful and can be altered to many scales to a desirable level of fabrication.
